Counting Days Between Dates: Inclusive, Exclusive and Deadlines
The number of days between two dates depends on whether you count both ends. October 1 to October 31 is 30 days apart but 31 days if both days count. Countdowns use the first number; stays, courses and leave periods often use the second.
The question behind every date count
"How many days from October 1 to October 31?" has two correct answers: 30 or 31. The first counts the days between the dates, the way a calendar difference or elapsed time works. The second counts both the first and last day, the way you'd count days of a hotel stay, a festival or a work assignment. Most mistakes with deadlines come from mixing the two.

Rule: if both the start day and the end day "count" as days of the period, tick Include the end date in the calculator, or add 1 to the difference.
How many days from January 1 to the end of each month?
A ready reference for the questions people ask most, such as "how many days from January 1 to June 30". The inclusive count is also the day of the year: June 30 is day 181 of 2026.

Every count after February is one day higher in a leap year, because of February 29. The next leap years are 2028 and 2032. For any other pair of dates, enter them in the Days Between Dates calculator.
How many days are in a few months?
Months have 28 to 31 days, so a period given in months does not have a fixed number of days. Checked across every start month from 2025 to 2029:
- 1 month: 28 to 31 days.
- 3 months: 89 to 92 days. February 1 to May 1, 2026 is 89 days, while July 1 to October 1 is 92.
- 6 months: 181 to 184 days. January 1 to July 1, 2026 is 181 days, while July 1, 2026 to January 1, 2027 is 184.
When a contract or notice says "3 months", it usually means the same date three months later, not a fixed 90 days, so count from the actual dates.
Which one to use
- Countdowns and elapsed time ("how many days until my trip?"): use the difference. On the day before, the answer is 1.
- Durations where both ends are working or active days (a project running Monday to Friday, a 7-day course, a leave request): use inclusive counting. Monday to Friday is 4 days apart but 5 days of work.
- Hotel and rental stays: count nights, which equals the difference. Check-in October 10, check-out October 13 is 3 nights.

Deadlines: "within 30 days"
If a notice dated September 30, 2026 says you must respond within 30 days, adding 30 to the date gives Friday, October 30, 2026. Within 90 days gives Tuesday, December 29, 2026.
But legal and official deadlines often have their own rules:
- Whether the day of the notice counts as day 0 or day 1.
- Whether a deadline that lands on a weekend or public holiday moves to the next working day.
- Whether "30 days" means calendar days or business days.
When the stakes are high, read the rule in the document itself, and don't wait for the last day.
Business days
The calculator shows working days next to the calendar-day count. Choose your weekend first: Saturday and Sunday in the US, UK and most of Europe, but Friday and Saturday in Jordan, Saudi Arabia and Egypt. October 2026 has 31 days, 22 of them Monday to Friday and 21 Sunday to Thursday. Public holidays vary by country and region, so subtract any that apply to you. Leap years
A year has 366 days if it's divisible by 4, except century years not divisible by 400. So 2028 is a leap year, 2100 won't be, and 2000 was. That's why September 30, 2026 to September 30, 2027 is 365 days, but September 30, 2027 to September 30, 2028 is 366: the second span includes February 29, 2028.
Why the hours can surprise you
The calculator's hours are days × 24. In places that use daylight saving time, the real clock time across a clock change is one hour more or less. For example, a period that includes the last Sunday of October in the EU, October 25, 2026, has one extra hour. For flights, shifts and billing by the hour, count actual clock times rather than days.
Weeks and months
Weeks are days ÷ 7, so 86 days is 12.29 weeks, or 12 weeks and 2 days. Months are not a fixed number of days, so the calculator gives a calendar breakdown instead: 28 days is a whole month from February 1 to March 1, but not from March 1 to March 29. When a contract says "3 months", it normally means the same date three months later, not a fixed number of days.
Frequently asked questions
Does the calculator include the end date?
Not by default. It returns the difference between the dates. Tick Include the end date, or add 1, if you want both the start and end dates counted.
What if I enter the dates the wrong way round?
The calculator still gives the number of days and indicates that the end date is before the start date.
How many days are there in a year?
365 in a common year and 366 in a leap year. Over a long period the average is 365.2425 days.
How many days are there from January 1 to June 30?
180 days in 2026, or 181 if you count both January 1 and June 30. In a leap year such as 2028 it is 181 days, or 182 counting both days.
How many days are in 6 months?
Between 181 and 184 days, depending on which months the period covers and whether it includes February. Enter the actual dates in the calculator for the exact number.
How do I count only weekdays?
Count full weeks as 5 weekdays each, add the weekdays in the remaining partial week, then subtract public holidays.
