Word Count Limits: Essays, Abstracts, Cover Letters and More
The Common App personal essay allows 250–650 words, abstracts are usually 150–250, and cover letters 250–400. Always follow your own instructions, leave a small margin under strict limits, and cut whole points before trimming words.
Typical word limits
Word limits keep writing focused and give every applicant or author the same space. Some are strict, like an online form that stops accepting text; others are guidelines. Always use the limit in your own instructions, since requirements change between schools, journals and employers. Common ranges:
| Type of writing | Typical limit | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Common App personal essay (US college) | 250–650 words | 650 is a hard maximum; the form rejects shorter than 250 |
| College supplemental essay | 50–400 words | Set by each college |
| Research abstract | 150–250 words | APA style caps abstracts at 250 words; journals set their own |
| Cover letter | 250–400 words | Usually a guideline; one page is the practical limit |
| Scholarship or grant statement | 300–1,000 words | Often strict |
| University coursework essay | 1,500–3,000 words | Many courses allow about 10% over or under |
| Blog post or guide | 800–2,000 words | No fixed limit; length should match the topic |
Social posts, SMS and page titles are limited by characters, not words; see Character Limits for Social Posts, SMS and SEO Titles.
How words are counted
The Word Counter counts groups of characters separated by whitespace. That matches how most word processors and application forms count, with a few edge cases worth knowing:
| Text | Words counted | Why |
|---|---|---|
| well-known | 1 | Hyphenated words without spaces stay one word |
| well - known | 3 | The spaced hyphen becomes its own "word" |
| 3.5 million | 2 | Numbers count as words |
| https://utivaro.com/guides | 1 | A link without spaces is one word |
| e.g. | 1 | Abbreviations are one word |
| don't | 1 | Contractions are one word |
Different systems may treat dashes, slashes or footnotes differently, so leave a small margin: aim for 5–10 words under a strict limit.
Reading and speaking time
The Word Counter estimates reading time at 225 words per minute, rounded up. Speaking is slower: about 130–150 words per minute for a clear presentation or speech.
| Words | Reading time (225 wpm) | Speaking time (about 140 wpm) |
|---|---|---|
| 250 | 2 min | about 1¾ min |
| 500 | 3 min | about 3½ min |
| 650 | 3 min | about 4¾ min |
| 1,000 | 5 min | about 7 min |
| 1,500 | 7 min | about 10¾ min |
| 2,000 | 9 min | about 14¼ min |
For a 5-minute talk, write about 650–750 words. For a 1-minute toast, about 130–150.
How to cut a text that's too long
Work from big cuts to small ones. Big cuts save the most words for the least effort:
- Remove a whole point. If you have four examples, keep the strongest two. This alone can save 20%.
- Delete the warm-up. First paragraphs often restate the question or explain what you're about to say. Start with your first real point.
- Cut the summary if the ending just repeats what came before.
- Remove filler phrases: "in order to" → "to"; "due to the fact that" → "because"; "at this point in time" → "now"; "it is important to note that" → delete.
- Drop weak intensifiers: very, really, quite, extremely, actually, basically.
- Prefer verbs to nouns: "made a decision to" → "decided"; "conducted an analysis of" → "analysed".
- Merge short sentences that share a subject.
Paste each version into the Word Counter to track progress.
Too short?
Don't pad. Add a concrete example, a number, or a sentence explaining why a point matters. Readers and reviewers notice filler, and specific detail is what makes writing persuasive.
Frequently asked questions
Does the title count toward the word limit?
Usually not for essays and articles, but some forms count everything in the text box. Check the instructions or paste exactly what you'll submit.
Can I go over a word limit slightly?
Online forms usually block extra words. For coursework, many institutions allow about 10% either way, but some penalize any excess. Follow the stated policy.
Why do Word and the Word Counter give different counts?
Programs treat dashes, slashes and special characters slightly differently. The difference is normally a few words.
How many pages is 1,000 words?
About 2 pages single-spaced or 4 pages double-spaced, in a 12-point font with standard margins.
