How to Pick a Fair Random Winner for a Giveaway

Number every valid entry from 1 to N, draw with the Random Number Generator set from 1 to N with duplicates off, and record the draw so participants can see it was fair. The preparation matters more than the random number.

What makes a draw fair

A fair giveaway draw has three properties: every eligible entry has the same chance, nobody can influence the result after seeing the entries, and you can show participants how the winner was chosen. The random number is the easy part. The work is in preparing the list and documenting the draw.

Step 1: write the rules before you start

Publish these with the giveaway, not after it ends:

  • How to enter, and whether one person can enter more than once.
  • The closing date and time, with the time zone.
  • Who is eligible (age, country, followers only).
  • How the winner will be drawn and announced, and how long they have to respond.
  • What happens if the winner doesn't respond: usually a redraw.

Social platforms have their own promotion rules, and many countries regulate prize draws. Check both before running a giveaway with a valuable prize.

Step 2: build a clean, numbered list

  1. Export or copy all entries after the closing time.
  2. Remove entries that break the rules: duplicates if one entry per person, entries after the deadline, ineligible accounts.
  3. Sort the list in a neutral order, such as by entry time or alphabetically by username. Don't reorder it after this point.
  4. Number the entries from 1 to N, for example in a spreadsheet column.
  5. Save a copy of the final list, or a screenshot of it, before drawing.

If rules allow extra entries (say, one per friend tagged), give each extra entry its own row, so a person with three entries appears three times.

Step 3: draw the number

  1. Open the Random Number Generator.
  2. Set Minimum to 1 and Maximum to N, the number of entries.
  3. Set How many numbers to the number of winners, plus a few backups if you want reserve winners in order.
  4. Keep Decimal places at 0, and turn on No duplicate results so the same entry can't win twice.
  5. Generate once, and record the result straight away.

The generator uses your browser's cryptographic randomness, so every number from 1 to N is equally likely. It doesn't keep a record of draws, which is why you document the result yourself in the next step.

Step 4: make it verifiable

People trust a draw they can see. Options, from simplest to strongest:

  • Screen-record the draw: show the final numbered list, the generator settings, the single click, and the winning number matched to the list.
  • Draw live on a stream or in a video post.
  • Ask a witness, such as a colleague or community moderator, to watch and confirm the result.
  • Publish the numbered list (usernames only, never personal details) together with the winning number.

Generate once. If you run the generator several times and pick the result you prefer, the draw is no longer fair, even if nobody notices. Decide in advance how you will handle an invalid winner, for example "we redraw once from the remaining entries".

Worked example

A giveaway received 437 comments. After removing 19 duplicates and 6 entries posted after the deadline, 412 valid entries remain, numbered 1–412 by comment time. The organizer draws 1 winner and 2 backups, with duplicates off. The generator returns 287, 54 and 391: entry 287 wins, and entries 54 and 391 are first and second reserve.

Picking several winners

  • Draw all winners in one go with duplicates turned off, and assign prizes in the order the numbers appear, if prizes differ.
  • If one person has several entries and should win only once, skip any repeated person and take the next backup number.

Mistakes that make draws unfair

  • Scrolling and stopping on a comment "at random." Human choices aren't random, and the order of comments varies by app and device.
  • Changing the list after drawing, for example removing an entry that turned out to be a friend.
  • Redrawing without a published reason.
  • Forgetting the time zone, which can wrongly exclude late entries or include them.

Other uses of the same method

The same steps work for choosing a random student, assigning tasks or seats, picking survey participants, or selecting a sample for quality checks: number the list, draw without duplicates, record the result.

Frequently asked questions

Is an online random number generator really random?

Utivaro's generator uses the browser's cryptographic random number generator where available, which is designed to be unpredictable. For a giveaway this is more than sufficient.

How do I prove the draw was fair?

Record the final numbered list, the generator settings and the draw in one screen recording, and publish the winning number with the list.

Can I use it for a lottery with real money?

Regulated lotteries and gambling have legal requirements for certified random number generators and audits. Use a licensed provider.

What if the winner doesn't respond?

Follow your published rules, usually moving to the first backup number drawn at the same time.
